Hit-and-Run Tragedy at Ogudu Flyover: Pedestrian Killed After Driver Flees Scene

Last Sunday, a heartbreaking incident unfolded at the Ogudu flyover bridge (heading into Ifako, Lagos) when a pedestrian lost their life after being struck by a Nissan Jeep. The vehicle bearing registration number KJA 354 ET tried to flee the scene immediately after the collision. Thankfully, officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were already nearby and sprang into action.

According to LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the driver didn’t stop to assist the injured; instead, he attempted to make a getaway. But the agency’s patrol operatives intervened, apprehending the driver and coordinating a rescue effort to evacuate the pedestrian for medical care. Sadly, the injured person succumbed to their injuries.

The crash reportedly happened after the driver tried to outmanoeuvre a heavily loaded truck, lost control, and struck the unsuspecting pedestrian. The situation worsened because no immediate help was offered until LASTMA and their law enforcement partners stepped in.

After the arrest, LASTMA handed the driver over to the Ogudu Police Division. The mangled vehicle was also seized and moved to the police station for a full investigation.

Bakare-Oki used the tragedy as a warning for all motorists: driving recklessly, speeding, or trying dangerous overtakes doesn’t just endanger the driver it puts pedestrians and other road users at serious risk.
