Israel To Present Highest Civilian Honour To Trump

Israel has announced that it will bestow its highest civilian award on former U.S. President Donald Trump. The recognition comes from President Isaac Herzog, who credits Trump with significant contributions to a plan aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas conflict and facilitating the release of hostages from Gaza.

What the Honour Entails

According to Herzog, the award is the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour, reserved for individuals who have made truly outstanding contributions to the state of Israel or to humanity at large. Israel has awarded this distinction only a few times in its history.

The presentation is expected to take place in the coming months. Herzog intends to inform Trump of the decision during an upcoming visit to Israel.

Hostage Release & Peace Plan

Trump has been a central figure in brokering a peace plan that includes a phased hostage-prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas. The first phase is due to begin as part of efforts to ease tensions after more than two years of conflict that started with Hamas’s attack in October 2023.

During his trip, Trump is expected to meet with families of the hostages and address the Israeli parliament. These actions underscore Israel’s recognition of his role in the release process.

The Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour represents one of the highest civilian recognitions. Past recipients include Barack Obama in 2013, among others. It’s a symbol of gratitude and respect when a foreign leader is seen to have advanced peace or goodwill toward Israel.
