“If You Want To Marry My Daughter, Just Buy Me A Brand New Bible And Carry Her”: Apostle Johnson Suleman Questions Costly Marriage Demands

In a sermon that’s generating buzz, Apostle Johnson Suleman leader of Omega Fire Ministries spoke out against the trend of excessive material demands placed on men hoping to wed. He says these traditions are making marriage harder to achieve.

“A Simple Gesture Is Enough”

Addressing his congregation, Suleman criticized what he sees as unfair cultural expectations: long lists of gifts, expensive items, or financial burdens before a man can marry. He argued that in today’s challenging economy, such demands create stress, fear, and sometimes make people abandon marriage plans altogether.

To drive home his point, he used his own family as an example. “If anybody wants to marry my daughter,” he said, “it’s very easy just buy me a brand-new Bible. Then meet her mother and ask what she wants.” He added humor, pointing out that requests like bringing yam or other traditional items shouldn’t overshadow sincere gestures.

Reactions Are Mixed, But Many Praise His Stance

The message has struck a chord online. Some social media users are applauding Suleman for speaking against cost-inflated traditions, calling it a “refreshing” call back to simplicity and sincerity in relationships. Others, however, argue that traditions carry meaning and that symbolic gifts are also part of culture.

Experts suggest Suleman may be pushing for a cultural reset one where mentorship, character, and commitment matter more than the size of the bride price or the gifts.
