Lagos Police Arrest Self-Proclaimed “Obi of Lagos,” Halt Plan to Unveil ₦1.5 Billion Palace

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, along with three accomplices, for allegedly attempting to present himself as the “Obi of Lagos.” Authorities prevented the unveiling of a purported ₦1.5 billion palace tied to the title.

Azubike, who claims roots in Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom, Ideato North LGA, Imo State, was apprehended alongside Chief Chibuzor Ani (57 years old), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).

Intelligence notes showed that the suspects planned to unveil a prototype of a “Palace of Obi of Lagos State”, budgeted at ₦1.5 billion, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin. Police, including tactical units and the Eko Strike Force, acted when tipped off. They sealed off the venue to prevent the ceremony from holding and to avoid public unrest.

Legal & Cultural Implications

  • The Lagos State Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh warned the public against impostors who exploit traditional and cultural institutions for personal gain. He said the act contravenes the Obas and Chiefs Law (2015) and poses a risk to public order.
  • The suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing. They are expected to face charges once the probe concludes.
