UNIMAID ASUU Kicks Against Renaming Institution After Buhari
The University of Maiduguri branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has faulted the Federal Government’s decision to rename the school after former President Muhammadu Buhari. Speaking with newsmen in Maiduguri after the union’s congress, the chapter chairman, Dr. Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, said the move disregards the principles of university autonomy and academic freedom. He described the decision as “provocative and unacceptable,” insisting that it undermines the institution’s heritage.
According to him, the name University of Maiduguri is more than just a title — it represents decades of academic work, resilience, and service to the Northeast and Nigeria as a whole. He criticised the government for failing to consult stakeholders such as the governing council, staff, students, alumni, and the host community before making the announcement.
“Taking such a step without engagement is nothing short of an affront to the identity and legacy of this university,” Dr. Saidu stated.
